BIO
Hello, my name is Alicia Chu. I am a 17-year-old senior in high school and also a Juilliard Pre-College student majoring in voice.
I started singing in a local chorus when I was seven and started private vocal instruction when I was ten. Three months later, I won a singing competition and was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall. My singing journey has only grown since then. My recent accolades include the Third place winner for the Hal Leonard Voice Competition in 2023, the National 2nd place award for the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) competition in July 2022 after winning the Delaware and Eastern Region Division, and the national 3rd place Senior Voice winner of the MTNA(Music Teacher National Association) competition in March 2022 after winning the Texas and Texoma Region Division. Additionally, I was awarded the Most Promising Sophomore Award at Schmidt Vocal Competition in May 2022.
In my free time, I enjoy dancing, playing piano, guitar, and ukulele, as well as spending time with my family and friends.

Wow! I love your singing! At a young age, you are really such an artist. You're so musical and your voice is lovely. Very good Italian - and I don't say that lightly. :-)

My Passion for Senior Citizens
Last year, after two years of the pandemic, I had the opportunity to watch a live performance of the opera The Marriage of Figaro at the Delaware Opera House. It was a fantastic show with a full house, the majority of the audience being senior citizens. As an opera singer, I knew that there were so many other senior citizens that would have loved to enjoy a live opera performance but did not have the resources to access it.
In China, Mencius once advocated that "老吾老, 以及人之老", meaning: honor senior citizens as you do for your own family. Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away recently after staying in a senior center in China that got locked down due to Covid-19. The last time I visited her was in 2019, and I regret not being able to sing for her. In honor of my grandmother, I perform opera at senior centers every few weeks, bringing live classical music to the people that don't have access to it.
